A transparent hot-water planning tool

HotWaterWise is operated by Connor Murphy as an individual. It helps households explore hot-water demand, variable energy cost, heat-pump payback and electric-versus-gas trade-offs using consistent submitted inputs and disclosed planning assumptions.

Why I created HotWaterWise

“I wanted to give homeowners clearer information before they spent money on a new hot-water system.”

I created HotWaterWise because I wanted homeowners to have a clearer picture of what their hot water costs and how different systems compare.

When I was looking for hot-water information, a lot of what I found eventually pointed towards buying a product or booking a service. I wanted somewhere you could get the information first, use figures that suit your own household and compare the options without being pushed towards a sale.

I enjoy building websites, and this felt like a good way to turn that interest into something useful. If it helps you understand your bills or feel better informed before spending money on a new system, that’s what I hoped it would do.

Advertising is the only way I plan to earn money from the site, and I want to be upfront about that. I’m not selling hot-water systems, passing your details to installers or earning commission when you buy a product. The plan is to keep the tools free to use, with advertising kept separate from the calculations and comparisons.

The results are estimates, so the assumptions and methodology are available for you to check. My aim is to give you useful information you can question and compare against your own bills and quotes.

If you have a question, spot a mistake or have an idea that could make the site more useful, I’d like to hear from you at hotwaterwise@gmail.com.

I use Google AdSense for eligible advertising, with separate privacy choices. Google approval is required before ads can be served. Ad requests are paused while Google approval and site checks are completed.

Current coverage

The launch methodology supports five council areas: Brisbane City, Moreton Bay City, Logan City, Ipswich City and Redland City. The postcode helper uses evidence-derived physical-site classifications to assist with that selection. It does not broaden the calculator to all Queensland or Australia, and unresolved postcodes are not guessed.

What the tool does

  • Uses one accepted thermal-demand foundation across the calculators.
  • Shows the submitted demand, rates and planning assumptions used in a result.
  • Lets users replace supported tariff and cost defaults with bill or quote values.
  • Preserves submitted-state handoffs without applying a rooftop-PV numerical credit.
  • Frames results as estimates and comparisons, not recommendations.

What the tool does not establish

HotWaterWise does not inspect a home, quote an installation, guarantee a saving, provide licensed trade advice or select a product or installer. Estimates help organise the information needed for a decision; a property assessment and current written quote remain essential.

Check before relying on a result

Read the methodology, use current bill rates and a written installer quote, and ask an appropriately licensed tradesperson to assess the property.
